FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A sad update to a Central Texas girl infected with a brain-eating amoeba.

The family of Lily Avant, 10, has announced that Lily has died.

One of her aunts, Loni Yadon, posted on her Facebook page that Lily “fought the good fight and built an army of prayer warriors around the world doing it.”

Her cousin, Wendy Scott, who has been serving as the family spokeswoman throughout the ordeal, says Lily is now in the arms of Jesus.

A week ago, Lily was swimming in the Brazos River in Whitney; and soon thereafter, she had a headache and a fever, which quickly escalated to the point where she became incoherent and unresponsive.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, while the amoeba is common, infections by it are very rare.

The amoeba she contracted normally kills the person infected by it within five days; and according to the #Lilystrong Facebook page, only four people who have been infected by it have survived
