WYLIE (1080 KRLD) - Wylie police say a 10-year-old boy was hit by a car while he was riding his bike near Harrison Intermediate School Wednesday morning. They say the boy was in a crosswalk when the car hit him just before 8:00 a.m.

"Children, they can dart out quickly, so one minute it might look clear, the next minute, you have a child right there in front of you," says Wylie Police Sgt Donald English.

English says the boy was taken to the hospital, but he was in good condition.

As kids head back to school, English says drivers may still be getting used to more kids in crosswalks and on sidewalks in the morning, but he says kids can take action to protect themselves, too.

"One thing I want to stress is when you're riding your bicycle, have on a helmet. A helmet can save your life if you are struck by a vehicle," English says. "Sometimes kids are small, and so somebody might not see you over their hood or over their steering wheel, so don't dart out into traffic."

The driver of the car was cited for failure to yield and driving without a license.
