DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A member of the Dallas City Council is calling for cuts to the Dallas Police Department's budget.

Dallas City Council Member Lee Kleinman says those cuts need to start with the department's training academy.

He says there are several universities in north Texas that could provide classes for people who want to become cops.

Kleinman says the city must "seriously consider just shutting down the police academy." He believes the academy provides "indoctrination into a code of silence and a code of closing ranks."

He wants the Council to consider cuts to public safety spending when they work on next year's city budget.

The Council's Public Safety Committee which oversees the Police Department meets today and the agenda includes "recommendations for specific policy review and changes moving forward."
