DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - City officials are taking the first steps to clean up a controversial mountain of roof shingles in Southeast Dallas.
Yesterday, the city released a bid proposal that calls for loading and hauling away "175 thousand yards of shingles and related debris" from 9522 S. Central Expressway.
The dumping ground is not so lovingly referred to as Shingle Mountain. It's been a source of contention for about two years, prompting heated protests and lawsuits.
Companies who want to move the towering pile of debris must submit a bid by September 24.
The materials will be hauled to the McCommas Bluff Landfill on Youngblood Road, about a quarter mile away.
We are moving forward with the cleanup of Shingle Mountain. A request for bids from contractors was issued today. This has been in litigation since I became Mayor, and I am pleased to see the cleanup of this environmental injustice move forward. Our city is not a dumping ground.
