DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The City of Dallas plans to open the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as a temporary homeless shelter tonight and tomorrow night.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the 20's both evenings after a cold front moves through today.

The Convention Center will be used as an overflow shelter as the city's existing homeless shelters fill up with people trying to escape the cold weather. The plan is for the Convention Center to open at 5:30pm both Monday and Tuesday evenings.

"Homelessness in freezing temperatures is dangerous. Every year, we have people experiencing homelessness who literally freeze to death" said Council Member Cara Mendelsohn, City Council District 12.

The Convention Center has previously served as an emergency shelter for people who evacuated from other cities due to Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The City Council last year rejected a plan to use city recreation centers as temporary homeless shelters during severe weather. However, the city staff is working on a plan for temporary homeless shelters during the upcoming winter season along with a long-range plan for severe-weather homeless shelters.
