DALLAS (KRLD) - The Public Utility Commission of Texas has approved adding yet another telephone area code to the Dallas area. The PUC says 214, 972 and 469 are on track to run out of new numbers early in 2021. They'll begin assigning new numbers under the 945 area code at that time.
The 945 area code will be an overlay, which means those numbers will be available throughout the territory currently covered by 214 and the other Dallas area codes. That territory includes almost all of Dallas County plus parts of Collin, Denton, Rockwall, Ellis and Kaufman Counties.
Officials with the PUC expect the rollout of the 945 area code to go smoothly, since the region has already adopted the ten-digit dialing system. Customers with existing numbers in the 214, 972 and 469 area codes will be allowed to keep those numbers.
The new 945 area code is expected to meet the Dallas-area's demand for new phone numbers for thirteen years.
