With calls to abolish or defund police departments elsewhere, Dallas school superintendent Michael Hinojosa is resisting calls to do so with the school district's police force.

Five advocacy groups have signed a letter asking the Dallas district to redirect funding from campus police to things like extra counseling or more social workers.

The groups point to Minneapolis schools which are cutting their ties to the Minneapolis Police Department because of George Floyd's death.

But Hinojosa says the situations are different because, unlike Minneapolis or other urban districts, Dallas ISD has it's own police force and police chief who are not affiliated with Dallas Police Department.
