He says they were more media spectacles designed to roll out of the party's fall candidate.  He says they cost a lot of money and attention that didn't have a lot of importance in terms of actual work.

"We probably will see some kind of return to conventions once the pandemic has passed, but nothing of the elaborate pomp and circumstance that we saw in the past."Jones says the old conventions made donors and candidates uncomfortable because the donors had to pay for everything and the candidates had to raise the money. He says we in the future the nomination can occur in a much more media-oriented process that doesn't necessarily have to bring "thousands of people together to one city for no apparent reason other to support the candidate."Jones does not believe this would change the primary process but says by the time they get to the convention everything is a done deal.

"The actual voting in the convention has lost much of its relevance.  It still may occur.  We still may have the delegates get together but there's no reason to have this elaborate celebration to have a party business meeting."
