DENTON (KRLD) - There will be a rally outside the Courthouse on the Square in Denton tonight to show the community's opposition to hate speech. The rally was prompted by two incidents over the weekend.

Video posted online shows a group gathered outside a popular Denton bar Saturday night chanting a slogan associated with a white nationalist group. In another incident, an employee at another bar told the Denton Record-Chronicle that he had been attacked after he asked a man with swastika tattoos to leave the establishment.

Tonight's rally, called Hate Has No Home in Denton County is scheduled to start at 7 o'clock outside the Courthouse on the Square.

"The purpose is to condemn hate speech, acts of hate and hate groups... and also share and brainstorm positive solutions," said organizer Catherine Giles. "We'll have a time to share personal stories about hate and how it has affected families, individuals, businesses and tourism in Denton."

Denton Police say they are aware of the planned rally. The department says officers will be there to ensure the safety of those who attend.

Giles hopes to have a significant turnout at the event.

"We all need to work together to take a stand to condemn hate when it occurs and to take positive action to address it," she said.
