DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Health officials say a new TikTok challenge is encouraging teens to overdose on allergy meds.

In one week alone, doctors say three teens were hospitalized at Cook Children's because they overdosed on Benedryl. But officials say the teens weren't trying to hurt themselves, they were trying to get high.

The teens say videos on the social media platform TikTok claimed that people who take more than 12 Benedryl would hallucinate, so they tried it. One of the teens, a 14-year-old, says she took 14 pills. She was admitted to the hospital with a resting heart rate of 199 bpm.

Fortunately, she recovered. But doctor's say not everyone is so lucky. They're warning parents to keep an eye out for these kinds of challenges because this isn’t the first.

Another TikTok trend health officials are warning about is called the Nutmeg Challenge. In it, people ingest large amounts of nutmeg to get high. Officials say that can be dangerous too, and in some cases it might cause the user to go into a coma ... or die.
