Family Of Botham Jean Sues Apartment Complex Over Death

Botham Jean

Botham Jean was living at the Southside Flats apartments when he was shot and killed by Dallas police officer Amber Guyger almost two years ago.

According to a lawsuit recently filed in Dallas County, Jean's family is suing the Southside Flats apartments for wrongful death.

Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was convicted of murder last year and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The family’s attorney Lee Merritt is filing the suit because the family believes that the apartment complex failed to fix Botham’s door, which made it easier for Amber Guyger to enter his apartment.

Guyger testified during her trial last year that she thought she was in her own apartment, one floor below, and shot Jean because she believed he was an intruder.

The family is seeking $1 million in the lawsuit.

Also, momentum is building to rename a portion of Lamar Street in Dallas "Botham Jean Boulevard." On Wednesday, close family friends along with city and faith leaders gathered to call for the name change.
