MCKINNEY (1080 KRLD) - A man who previously taught at Cockrill Middle School in the McKinney ISD has been arrested on a charge of continuous abuse of a child. Kirby Glynn Smith was taken into custody on Tuesday.
McKinney Police say they opened an investigation after a boy made an outcry about being abused.
Police say Smith taught at Cockrill Middle School at the time, although they are not saying if the boy who made the outcry was a student at the school.
Smith was with the McKinney ISD from 2009 to 2018.
Smith is currently the Assistant Principal at Van Alstyne Middle School in the Van Alstyne ISD. That district is in Greyson County, about 20 miles north of McKinney. The Van Alstyne ISD says it has been made aware of the investigation. Smith has been placed on administrative leave and has been barred from entering school district property.
The McKinney ISD has released a statement about the case:
"We were deeply disturbed and saddened by the news that a former teacher in our district may be involved in the abuse of a child. We believe our number one priority is maintaining the safety and security of our students. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation we have very little information at this time. However, we are working closely with the McKinney PD and we will provide additional information when it becomes available."
