DALLAS (KRLD) - A firefighter was seriously injured Tuesday morning while working at the scene of a car crash in Far North Fort Worth. Fort Worth Fire was called to a rollover crash on Highway 114 just west of I-35W about 5:50 a.m.

The department says a firefighter was getting out of the truck when he was hit by another passing car. The firefighter was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to his lower body, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

"Right now, we're just very thankful that it wasn't worse," says Fort Worth Fire's Mike Drivdahl. "The freeway can be one of the scariest places for our firefighters to operate."

Police say the driver of the other car stopped and has been answering questions.

"We really need the public to understand there are a lot of things going on around an emergency scene," Drivdahl says. "Firefighters and first responders do their very best to keep their heads on a swivel, but there's responsibility for the public, too, to make sure they are aware of what's going on at that emergency scene, so please slow down, limit your distractions, move over as far as you can to give us room to operate."

No one else was seriously hurt in either crash.
