GARLAND (1080 KRLD) - Garland police shot a man they say was standing along a street Monday afternoon, swinging a machete and arguing with people.

Police were called to S. 3rd St., several blocks north of Miller Road about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses say the man was yelling at people and swing the machete at cars.

When Garland police arrived, they say the suspect started "yelling belligerently" at officers. They say the suspect also started walking toward officers while still "wielding the machete."

"During our conversations with the subject, he charged at the officers and one officer fired his weapon," says Garland Police Lieutenant Pedro Barineau.

The suspect, Scott Norris, 38, was hit and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After he was released Monday night, Norris was booked into the Garland Detention Center on a charge of aggravated assault against a public servant.

No one else was hurt. The officer who fired was placed on administrative leave while Garland police Internal Affairs and the Dallas County District Attorney's Public Integrity Unit investigate.
