Texas Democrats are calling the move a political ploy to distract Texans from the state’s “poor handling” of the coronavirus. Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa added that the Democratic Party is not advocating defunding the police. “What they're advocating is responsible policing,” said Hinojosa. “Making sure that people of color are not unfairly targeted and treated as you've seen in recent months in these stories.”
As for the Governor’s pledge, Hinojosa said, “When Greg Abbott wants to talk to me about accepting the a hundred billion dollars that have been offered to him to provide expanded Medicaid coverage to all Texans…Then I'll sit down and talk to them about these kinds of pledges.”
