GRAND PRAIRIE (1080 KRLD) - Grand Prairie police shot and killed a suspect with a knife Wednesday morning in the parking lot of an extended stay motel.
They say they received several 911 calls about 1:00 a.m. Wednesday from people at the Budget Suites along Highway 360, just north of I-30.
Those callers were reporting assaults in progress. Security at the motel called 911 as well, saying they were being chased in the parking lot by a man with a knife.
"The initiating officer and the back-up officer attempted to deescalate the situation by talking to this individual, trying to figure out what's going on," says the Grand Prairie Police Department's Mark Beseda. "The individual refused to cooperate. He was not speaking with officers and was engaging them with the knife. The officers feared for their life and ended up using deadly force on the individual."
Beseda says the suspect died at the motel. No officers, tenants or security members were hurt.
"Certainly our condolences go out to the family of this individual," he says. "A life was lost, and that's a tragic situation. It's very unfortunate."
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has identified the suspect as 30-year-old Dewayne Bowman. His address was listed as the same address as the motel.
