ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - Fort Worth to Austin in a half hour on the ground?
In about 10 years, that will no longer be science fiction.
It's called Virgin Hyperloop One, and it is currently being developed in the Nevada desert.
"This pod does not travel on a track," Walder says. "It levitates above a track. We use a technology called magnetic levitation."
And that yields a ride that is ultra smooth.
"You will be able to hold a cup of coffee when you're traveling at over 600 miles an hour," says Walder.
Hyperloop One can be used not only for people, but also for cargo.
The initial plans call for pods to connect the DFW Metroplex to Waco, Temple, Austin, San Antonio and Laredo.
There will be separate pods for each destination, so there will be no stops along the way.
And the pods can be hailed on demand.
"It should be on demand from where you are to where you want to go," Walder says. "It should go when you want to go and it should go directly to where you want to go."
The goal is to make this available for roughly the cost of a tank of gas for each trip.
"We don't want this to be a luxury product," says Walder. "We don't want it to be for the few. We want everybody to be able to use it."
The pod that's been used for testing is on the field at AT&T Stadium, and it's available for viewing as part of the stadium tour through Saturday.
