Jean Family Calls For Investigation Of Dallas Police Department

DALLAS (KRLD) - Botham Jean's family joined members of the Dallas faith community in calling for investigations and changes in the Police Department Friday.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall announced on Wednesday that there would be an internal affairs investigation of questionable behavior by other officers that surfaced during the trial.

Family attorney Lee Merritt is calling for the Department Of Justice to open up an investigation into the police department.

"We call on Chief Hall. We have learned that the Dallas Police Department is incompetent to investigate itself."

He wants a thorough investigative audit.

Botham Jean's mother Allison says while the family is leaving, they hope the city will act. She says there was still much more to be done and that the city of Dallas "needs to clean up inside" and "the Dallas Police Department has a lot of laundry to do."

"You need to seek meaningful change. We need to seek investigations and need to seek outcomes from these investigations. So talk but no action means nothing," she said.

Brandt Jean who told Amber Guyger he forgave her during the victim impact statements and gave her the now-famous hug in the courtroom, spoke about that moment.

"Not knowing the attention it would get, I said what I said. I meant what I said. I thank God he gave me the courage to say it," Jean said.

They say criticism judge Tammy Kemp is getting for giving Guyger a hug and a bible is unjustified.
