Man Impersonating Worker Stealing Jewelry From Elderly People's Homes

PLANO (1080 KRLD) - Plano Police are looking for a man disguising himself as a utility worker to prey on the elderly.

Police say at least five people have been victimized in recent weeks.

"He's identifying himself as either a maintenance worker, a pest control worker there to spray the apartment, or a water department employee to gain access inside the house," says Ofc. David Tilley. "He somehow convinces the homeowner — the resident there — to stay in another room while he goes into the bedroom to check something out."

Once in the bedroom, he makes his move.

"While he's in the bedroom, he commits a theft; and in the cases that we're looking into so far, they've all been jewelry."

The man appears to be in his early 30s, between 5'9" and 5'11", 180-200 lbs. and wearing a goatee.

Tilley says while the man is on the loose, it's important for seniors to remain vigilant.

"If you are not expecting a worker to come to your residence, don't open the door," says Tilley. "They can call 911 if they feel like there's a concern or fear for their safety, or they can call the apartment management and see if they have in fact scheduled a worker to come to the location."

Anyone with information is asked to call Plano Police at 972-941-2148.
