DALLAS (KRLD) - A new pilot program by the North Texas Tollway Authority is trying to eliminate wrong-way accidents.
The thermal camera program detects wrong-way drivers and deters them with flashing signs indicating the drivers are going the wrong way.
"Using heat emitted from a vehicle, thermal cameras monitor the regular flow of traffic. When a vehicle drives in the incorrect direction, signs flash 'Wrong Way,' warning a driver to correct their error," a release from the NTTA says.
Additionally, staffers at the NTTA's Safety Operation Center get an alert, can notify DPS Highway Patrol, and put messaging on overhead signs to warn other drivers of the presence of a potential wrong-way driver in the area.
