DALLAS (KRLD) - With anti- Semitic attacks on the rise, a Dallas City Council member says she's concerned about the safety of Dallas' Jewish community.
There have been a number of anti-Semitic attacks as of late. Most recently, five people were stabbed by a machete-wielding man at a Rabbi's home in New York during a Chanukah celebration.
Councilwoman Cara Mendelson and others in the Dallas Jewish community met with the top brass in the Dallas police department. She says the police did a good job explaining how they get and disseminate information and the plans that they have.
"And hey, this was a meeting at three o'clock on New Year's Eve, so you can't complain when everybody will assemble that quickly with that much information. I think it was a really good meeting. I think it was very supportive. I think they understood the concerns and I think they had appropriate information to share."
She says they did a good job explaining "how they receive information, how they handle the information they do receive, how they get that information out and the plans that they have."
She says armed security at Synagogues and Jewish events have been common for decades. Anti-Semitism is not new to America. It's all over the world. Frankly, this is sadly the story of our people, so we've always had to be concerned about our safety."
Mendelson has taken a leadership role in various Jewish organizations and says the Jewish community has a security group so if anything happens at one location, everyone can be informed right away.
