A San Marcos police officer is dead in what investigators call an ambush shooting.

Saturday, police were sent to an apartment complex because of a domestic violence call.

A man wearing body armor was lying in wait and opened fire when the first three officers arrived. All three were wounded and one, Justin Putnam, died.

The other two are reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Putnam was 31-years-old and had been with San Marcos P-D for five-and-a-half years.

The gunman committed suicide.
