DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Social distancing comes at a price ... especially for homeless shelters.
The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center in Dallas felt that first hand when it was forced to slash its emergency capacity nearly in half to honor social distancing protocols. New safety precautions are also putting a financial strain on the shelter.
"We've had to purchase personal protection items-- masks, hand sanitizer," said Dr. David Woody III, CEO of The Bridge. "We've had to employ some addition staff for cleaning."
Woody says the precautions are extensive, exhaustive ... and necessary. And he says, they seem to be working.
"We have been lucky enough on our campus to not have any guest test positive, or employee as well," he said.
Woody says the new safety measures will stay in place for as long as necessary. In the meantime, the shelter is relying on donations from the community to make ends meet. Donations can be made online here.
