Southwest Announces 20% Reduction In Flights For Coming Months

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - With two major airlines headquartered in Fort Worth and Dallas, the fate of the industry is a big worry for employees during the coronavirus outbreak.

"It really seems like, just over this weekend airlines have realized that they're going to need some major help to get through this," says Kyle Arnold, aviation reporter with the Dallas Morning News.

Just yesterday, Southwest Airlines cut flights by 20% in April, May and the first part of June. By comparison -- Southwest hardly cut flights at all in the weeks and months following 9/11.

"[The airlines are> talking to employees about cutting jobs temporarily, talking about voluntary furloughs," Arnold said. "They're talking about bailouts, billions of dollars from the government and massive cutbacks on the way they do business."

Together, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines and American Airlines employ nearly 200,000 people, many in DFW.
