MESQUITE (1080 KRLD) - Winter in Texas not cold enough for you? Just go to Mesquite, where folks are gearing up to become human popsicles.
The Polar Plunge Fundraiser held by Special Olympics Texas is kicking off tomorrow morning at the City Lake Aquatic Center, which means people are getting freezin' for a reason.
Special Olympics Texas holds the fundraiser every year in towns across the state ... and every year, at least a few people are brave enough to turn out (in costume) and plunge into frigid winter waters.
Money raised at the event goes to support over 50,000 Special Olympics athletes across Texas. In Mesquite, about 2,000 local athletes will benefit from the funds. This year, event officials in Mesquite were hoping to raise $10,000. So far, they've smashed that goal. Donations are sitting at $11,000 and climbing.
Tomorrow morning's event is kicking off with on-site registration at 8 a.m. The big plunge will begin around 10, and Special Olympics Texas says everyone is invited to join.
Other Polar Plunges happening tomorrow:
- Richland Hills (NRH20 Park)
- Wichita Falls (Boomtown)
