DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas State Senator Royce West will be one of the two candidates in a runoff for the Democratic Party's U.S. Senate nomination. West finished second behind MJ Hegar in a field of 12 candidates seeking the nomination.

Election night returns showed Hegar consistently leading with about 22 percent of the vote. West and Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez were in a close battle for second place. Results were slow coming in on election night, leaving both candidates waiting for more ballot boxes to be counted today.

The Texas Secretary of State's Office posted updated results late Wednesday afternoon showing West with 14.5 percent of the vote, putting him ahead of Tzintzún Ramirez. She received 12.2 percent and posted a message on Twitter conceeding that she would not be in the runoff.

Though we will not advance to a runoff, we accomplished something great. This campaign was consistently underestimated. I ran as a progressive, as a Latina, and as a working mom. We ran this campaign unapologetically, and we all have so much to be proud of. 2/
