Ted Rossman with Bankrate.com says they found that 54% of adults around the country felt the loss.

He says it's especially true when it comes to short term home rentals, sporting events, flights, hotels, live theater, and concerts.

When it comes to getting a refund, Rossman says, "The best thing you can do is start where you made the reservation or where you bought the ticket. If that doesn't work, then pull in your credit or debit card company as a backup. You have to use whatever card you paid with. I would tell you that a credit card is usually going to be more generous."

He says nearly 6 in 10 people who haven't received refunds for cancelled travel plans have completely given up their efforts in trying to receive a refund.
