DALLAS (KRLD) - The primary suspect in the murder of a 9-year-old girl in Dallas has surrendered to police.
Detectives had identified 19-year-old Tyrese Simmons as a suspect in the fatal shooting of Brandoniya Bennett. She was shot and killed in her apartment at the Roseland Townhomes on Munger Avenue.
Police believe Simmons had gone to the complex with several other people involved in a dispute over rap lyrics.
Dallas police Major Danny Williams says the shooting occurred after an argument that had taken place about a half-hour before.
"We believe the argument was due to the fact that the person who was arguing, and the witness he was arguing with, were rappers. In the rap songs they dis each other."
Major Williams says one of the men warned he would come back and quote - "air this place out."
Police say the shooters fired into the wrong apartment. Bennett was struck and killed.
Simmons surrendered at the Dallas County Jail late this afternoon.
Dallas Police are still asking that anyone with information about the case contact Detective Morgan with the Homicide Unit at 214-671-3630 or jake.morgan@dallascityhall.com.
