DALLAS (KRLD) - Olympic Gold medal winner Ryan Berube and hundreds of others will dive into Lake Ray Hubbard on Saturday morning for Swim Across America's Dallas Open Water Swim.
The program raises money for cancer research. Specifically, the Dallas swim will support early detection and innovative clinical trials at the SAA Innovative Clinical Trials Center at Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.
"All of the funds raised, and we've raised over $2.5 million over the last nine years, they all stay here in town," says Berube. "They don't go up the chain. They stay right here."
Berube loves being involved with this event. He had an uncle who died after a battle with cancer. And his wife, Michele, survived a brain tumor diagnosis at the age of 17.
"It's almost impossible not to be touched in some way through, friends or family, by cancer," says Berube.
The more than 300 swimmers will participate in one of three events: the half-mile swim, one-mile swim, or two-mile swim.
