HOUSTON (1080 KRLD) - Three cases of coronavirus have been confirmed outside the group in quarantine at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Two people live in Harris County; the third lives in Fort Bend County.
Two others are "presumed" to have coronavirus, but they are waiting for the Centers for Disease Control to confirm local test results.
All five had traveled together to Egypt in late February.
"They are part of a larger group that we're aware of," says Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. "We have a close loop of people right now who we've identified and are following up with and informing them they may have been exposed. We're continually trying to identify if there's anybody else."
One of the people confirmed with coronavirus is an employee at Rice University. Rice says that employee was only on campus February 24 and 25 and only went into one building.
The school says the employee only had contact with other staff and doctoral students. Rice asked other employees who did have contact with the person to self-isolate. The school says no one else has shown symptoms.
"At this time, we are not planning to suspend campus operations or classes. Going forward, we will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC and Harris County Public Health," the university wrote in a statement.
Rice says the building where the employee was working and the rest of campus have been "extensively and continuously sanitized."
