DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The US Department of Transportation is awarding $811 million in federal grant money to 211 airports across Texas as part of the CARES Act. Airports can use the money to cover operating expenses like payroll and utility costs.
The funds can also be used for debt payments or capital projects like new construction.
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the grants "will help fund the continued operations of our nation's airports during this crisis and save workers' jobs."
The largest grants are going to the largest airports. DFW International is receiving $299 million. George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston will receive $149 million. Love Field in Dallas is receiving $53 million.
Smaller airports are also receiving financial aid through the program.
Lubbock's Preston Smith International Airport is getting $9.5 million, Valley International Airport in Harlingen is getting $20 million and the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport is getting $1.2 million.
