DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Walmart says it will stop selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition. They will also request that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms in stores even where state laws allow it.

The announcement comes after a mass shooting claimed seven lives in Odessa, and two other back-to-back shootings last month. One of the shootings was at a WalMart store in El Paso.

The move still allows them to sell hunting rifles and related ammunition only.

WalMart wants customers to refrain from openly carrying firearms at its WalMart and Sam's Club stores unless they are law enforcement officers.

Following WalMart’s lead, Kroger is requesting customers no longer openly carry firearms into its stores, even in states where open carry is legal, the company announced Tuesday evening.

Kroger stopped selling guns last year.
