NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (1080 KRLD) - A police K9 is recovering from gunshot wounds as a man faces charges for assaulting police.

North Richland Hills K9 Officer Koba is doing fine after overnight surgery.

Koba and his fellow officers were helping Watauga police handle a suspect Monday night. The man threatened officers, and they first used Koba to try and subdue him.  Police say after they deployed less lethal options, the man fired at them – so they fired back.

Koba was injured in the exchange of gunfire, but was wearing a vest.  Police believe that's what saved his life.

The suspect, 47 year old Jamie Ramirez was also struck.

Ramirez is out of surgery and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer.

Police hope Koba will be back on active duty once he's recovered.

Police say Koba is part Dutch Shephard and part Belgian Malinois. Koba and his handler have been together for two and a half years.
