(1080 KRLD) - The NTSB says Boeing may have confused pilots in the 737 Max jets.
Federal safety officials say Boeing underestimated the time it takes for pilots to diagnose and react when they are being bombarded by multiple, warning alerts.
They want Boeing to consider how cockpit confusion can slow the response of pilots who are dealing with the kind of problem that likely caused two airliners to crash in the past year.
The board says research shows that when many alarms compete for pilots' attention, they don't always respond as quickly as intended.
Aviation expert and former pilot Denny Kelly says the pilots of the downed planes shouldn't have been flying.
"The captain was overloaded with information. They those guys just didn't have the background and experience to overcome it. If those were pilots from Southwest of American, this never would have happened," Kelly says.
Both Southwest and American Airlines have grounded their 737 Max jets leading to thousands of flight cancellations.
