DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Members of the Dallas City Council have approved installing new crosswalks on a busy street in the Oak Lawn neighborhood, which is known as the heart of the city's gay and lesbian community.

"Not just any rainbow crosswalks, but the colors that are in the LGBTQ 'Pride' flag," said Chris Luna with the Dallas Crosswalk Project during Wednesday's Council Meeting. "This month we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and what began the modern-day LGBT activism period. This would be a great anniversary present for that 50th anniversary."

The crosswalks with the rainbow design will be installed along Cedar Springs Road between Douglas Avenue and Oak Lawn Avenue.

"By having these rainbow crosswalks, we will be showing not just the residents of Dallas but the entire world...that the City of Dallas is a welcoming community," said Council Member Omar Narvaez, "because we not only embrace the LGBT community but we embrace the art and culture of it."

Work on the new crosswalks is expected to start this fall and be finished in the spring. They're estimated to cost about $128,000. The Dallas Crosswalk Project is working with the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce to raise private donations to cover the cost.
