RICHARDSON (1080 KRLD) - A stretch of Highway 75 in Richardson has been renamed for a fallen police officer, and now funds are needed to create the new highway signs.

Officer David Sherrard was killed in the line of duty in February of last year. State representative Jeff Leach, who serves parts of Richardson, sponsored the bill to rename part of that highway for him.

It was recently passed by the state legislature.

However, public funds aren't being used to create the new highway signs, so the Richardson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association is calling for donations from people.

TXDOT estimates the total cost is just over $24,000.

Any excess funds that are raised will go toward the Richardson Police Officer Memorial that's under construction.
