DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Landmark Commission has approved the removal of the Confederate monument in Pioneer Park Cemetery.

Last month, city council members voted in favor of removing the 65 foot Confederate War statue near the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

The Landmark Commission voted 10 to 5 to disassemble it and put it in storage.

Councilmembers argue the monument was moved to the cemetery in 1961, long after the cemetery's historically significant period of 1849-1921. Their resolution calls it "a noncontributing structure for the historic overlay district."

It will cost Dallas an estimated $480,000 to saw the monument into pieces, move it and store it.
