FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Tarrant County commissioners will vote today on whether to renew an immigration enforcement program.

The program is called 287-g, and it allows local law enforcement officers in participating departments also to act as ICE agents.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office is one of 80 departments in 21 states participating in the program. It ends at the end of the month, and participating departments now have to decide whether to continue the program.

It's been controversial nationwide. Supporters say it keeps communities safer, while opponents say it strikes fear in immigrant communities.

The Star-Telegram reports Judge Glen Whitley and Commissioner Gary Fickes plan on voting in favor of continuing the program.
