AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - State Representative Lyle Larson's constitutional amendment would allow Texans to vote on whether to permanently switch to either daylight savings or standard time.
The Texas House passed the resolution 133 Yeas to 9 Nays with one Present not voting.
When debating the issue Larson made this argument, “The whole intent of this bill is to stop changing clocks. For 53 years the state of Texas has subjected its citizens to changing its clocks in the spring and the fall and it’s nonsensical in a modern society.”
State Rep John Smithee’s amendment to allow voters a third option to not change anything was rejected, despite his well thought out football-related argument. “If we go to Standard Time while the rest of the country is on Daylight Savings Time our football games in the NFL will go from a 12 o’clock start to 11 o’clock…churches won’t like that.”
The resolution is now in the hands of the Texas Senate.
If approved it would be up to the voters to decide in November.
