The Department of Homeland Security is giving Texas a $4.7 million grant for border security. The "Operation Stonegarden Grant Program" provides funding for law enforcement along the border.
The money will go to 29 state and local agencies in counties along the Rio Grande.
"These grants will provide more resources to the men and women of law enforcement who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe," Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement. "I am grateful for our partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and I remain committed to securing our southern border."
Abbott's office says the money will pay for overtime, equipment and related operational costs. His office says, "OPSG promotes a layered and coordinated approach to border security."
The grant is the first of the year from the Department of Homeland Security. In 2018, DHS and FEMA sent $30 million in funding to Texas. Abbott's office says that was a 10 percent increase from 2017.
