Prosecutors say Modesto Gonzalez III stole more than $300,000 dollars from immigrants in Texas and Illinois. They say he pretended to be a drug enforcement agent and told the victims they would be deported if they did not pay him thousands of dollars.
Prosecutors say he later demanded the immigrants pay him taxes. Now, he has to repay the victims.
In March, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the case that involved people in Austin and Chicago.
He has three previous convictions for impersonating an officer and impersonation based theft.
He is sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.
