WEST (1080 KRLD) - A memorial is set to be unveiled this weekend for the 15 people lost in the fertilizer plant explosion in West.
On April 17, 2013, 11 firefighters and four residents of West were killed when chemicals at the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility exploded.
West’s Mayor Tommy Muska says in the six years that have passed, the town is like brand new.
“You’d be utterly surprised,” he says. “We have rebuilt the north part of town that was blown up. We had the help from FEMA and the state of Texas, but these people pulled themselves up by the bootstraps, and the town is better for it.”
The Fallen Heroes memorial will stand in West's city park. It was designed by Kurt Vrbas, who lives in West.
