DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas police say they are investigating the brutal assault of a transgender woman as a possible hate crime.

23-year-old Muhlaysia Booker was attacked Friday night by several people at the Royal Crest Apartments on Wilhurt Avenue. The attack occurred after a minor traffic accident, Booker told police.

She was kicked and beaten while suspects allegedly shouted homophobic slurs at her. The entire assault was caught on video and several witnesses were also on the scene.

Booker's family says this is not the first time Booker has faced violence because of her gender, and they hope hate crime charges are pursued.

Police are investigating the incident, which Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings condemned in a press release. In the release, Rawlings says the attackers “... do not represent how Dallasites feel about our thriving LGBTQ community," and "We will not stand for this kind of behavior."

Booker is recovering from the attack at an area hospital, her condition is currently unknown.
