Is 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas' the best holiday classic of all time?

It's beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas! As temps drop across the country, and everyone starts their various holiday celebrations, now is the perfect time to revisit some classic holiday movies.

These movies can be enjoyed with a glass of hot cocoa while trying to keep warm on these cold winter nights or just when you want to bond with your family and friends and experience a bit of nostalgia.


On this week's special holiday edition of What to Watch - we asked the anchors in our newsroom and the digital team here at KRLD to find out their favorite holiday movies and found out quickly that there is one movie that is clearly a fan favorite.

Originally released in 2000, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' has been a holiday classic for over 20 years. It's the story of an outcast who just wanted to be accepted weaved into a Christmas obessed city. Jim Carrey brings life and laughs to the Grinch and his performance is a main reason why it has stood the test of time.

While some may debate if the action thriller 'Die Hard' is truly a Christmas movie it does take place on Christmas Eve, so we'll let you decide. A New York City police officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) has to save his wife and other hostages as their building is taken hostage during their Christmas party. The 1988 release still ruffles feathers to this day on whether it qualifies to be in the holiday genre but it is undeniably a classic.

Every child at some point has probably wished they could eat candy for breakfast or stay up all night. Well the night before a family holiday trip, Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) wished that his family was gone. And when he awoke, that wish came true. Sort of. 'Home Alone' is about a boy who was mistakenly left home and now has to protect his house from a duo of wacky burglars. Every year since 1990 kids and adults alike love laughing at the hijinks pulled by Macaulay Culkin's character.

'Home Alone' is available to stream on Disney+.

Will Ferrel makes Christmas history as the first ever human at the North Pole. He just doesn't know. Ferrel's character Buddy was raised around the elves in Santa's workshop and as he grows bigger than everyone else realizes that he may be different. He sets his sights on New York City to find his biological father who is a children's book author. 'Elf ' hilariously shows how Buddy gets used to regular life as he also brings Christmas cheer wherever he goes.

'Elf' is available to stream on HBO Max.
