'The Garden: Commune or Cult' is a new series airing on Discovery Channel featuring 'The Garden,' an off-grid community based off of large lands in South America.
This community has its own set of rules and an open-door policy for any one of its members to be leaders of their society. However, there is an intense initiation process where some leave within a week.
The show follows four new members on their journey to make it through a trial period at The Garden. While in the beginning it seems like a wonderland free from modern society, they quickly realize that there may be more to the community than prefaced. Will they survive and find true paradise in The Garden or will they find it more as a cult?
Tisheila Early is one of the initiates in the series. She joined KRLD's What to Watch team to talk about why she decided to join this community.
What was the initial attraction for you to join this type of community and what did you hope to gain from it?
I had already had the desire to... live off-grid. And so this was the opportunity to go experience it firsthand before I made the move for myself. It was for that reason, you know, that was a good experience because I learned a lot.
You mentioned AI a few times in the episode. Could you tell me a bit about your concern about the future of AI?
AI is good and could potentially be bad from a business perspective. It could help you advance your business, but just from a social perspective, people can use AI for the wrong things. Not only that, if you give it too much freedom to, you know, think for itself. I mean, think about the way that we think about... ourselves as human beings.
Imagine you're giving this creation, the autonomy, to think and, understand human beings in the way that we are, the things that we do, how we are with each other, how we are with the earth, and things like that. And then it all of a sudden decides [that] humans are destructive and we don't need them now.
They're bigger than us, smarter than us. They're faster than us. And, you know, the fear is that one day they'll decide that we're of no use anymore.
