DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys dodged a bullet when an MRI revealed that linebacker Leighton Vander Esch suffered a shoulder stinger and not a neck injury.

"What we’ve gotten is positive in terms of not re-injuring his prior injury to his neck, which was the concern. Looks like he’s avoided that," Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said Monday on the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan.

Not only did Vander Esch avoid a serious injury, but the linebacker is expected to return this season.

"We're going to have to work with him this week to see how much time he's going to miss. He probably will still miss some time. But the prognosis right now, albeit early, is that he'll be able to come back and play this year," Jones said.

Vander Esch had neck surgery in Dec. 2019 after being diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. The injury limited him to just nine games during the 2019 season.
