Broaddus: Cowboys to shut down DeMarcus Lawrence for rest of 2024 season

The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence for the rest of the 2024 season, Bryan Broaddus reported Wednesday on the GBag Nation on 105.3 The Fan.

The news comes after head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that he didn't see Lawrence being able to play this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"They tried their best to get him back. There was a couple times where I was passing by the field, watching him, and I felt like [he was working hard with Cowboys trainer Britt Brown). ... But they just couldn't get that (foot) where it needed to be, and it wasn't worth the risk for them going forward," Broaddus said.

Lawrence suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot in Dallas' Week 4 win against the New York Giants and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 1. The initial estimated timeline for his return was four to eight weeks.

The 32-year-old began working in the rehab group on the sideline at Cowboys' practice on Nov. 21. He made enough progress for Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones to declare on Nov. 29 that they "more than likely" would be getting Lawrence back against the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 9. Lawrence ultimately sat out of that game and last Sunday's win at Carolina.

Lawrence has played his entire 11-year career with the Cowboys but will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. He has previously stated that he plans on playing next season. But will that be in Dallas?

"We may have seen Tank Lawrence for the last time in a Cowboys uniform," Broaddus said.

Could we see him take a discount this offseason to return?
