Las Vegas Raiders offensive tackle Trent Brown was hospitalized in Cleveland on Sunday and remained there Monday morning after an apparent mishap while he was receiving an IV led to a serious medical complication.
Brown was reportedly "wheeled out" of the Raiders locker room prior to kickoff against the Browns on Sunday after air entered his bloodstream during the IV, fueling fears of a potential embolism, reports said.
Brown, the team's starting right tackle, had been out since Week 5 after a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and appeared to be on the verge of returning Sunday.
But the setback with the IV seems to have pushed back his return at least another week.
The NFLPA was already investigating the incident, Pro Football Talk reported.
Raiders coach Jon Gruden was vague about Brown's condition while speaking with reporters after the game.
"We're just going to say that he got ill here in the locker room and he's being evaluated right now," Gruden said. "We'll update you as soon as we know something. But I'm told everything is OK. We were expecting Trent to play today; he had a great practice on Friday."
Brown, a first-time Pro Bowler in 2019, remained in a Cleveland-area hospital on Sunday night while his teammates returned to Nevada.
The scary medical episode conjured memories of Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor, sidelined since Week 1 with a punctured lung after an apparent botched injection by Los Angeles team medical staff.
Raiders quarterback Derek Carr described the surreal scene.
"All of a sudden, we come in and they're wheeling him out, and I'm like, 'Bro, what is going on?' It was crazy, and so we prayed," Carr told reporters. "As a team we prayed for him, we made sure he was OK, his family -- because I'm sure they were scared to death."
Despite Brown's absence, the Raiders managed to knock off the Browns, 16-6, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Brown, 27, was a seventh-round draft pick of the 49ers back in 2015.
