Cowboys to start Cooper Rush vs. Texans; QB Will Grier added to practice squad

The Dallas Cowboys won't be turning away from Cooper Rush after his poor performance in Sunday's 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys' offense managed just 146 yards on offense between Rush and third-string quarterback Trey Lance, who played the entire fourth quarter.

Rush was 13-for-23 for a grand total of 45 yards through the air and had two fumbles. Lance wasn't any better in mop-up duty, going 4-for-6 for 21 yards and an interception. He also ran for 17 yards on three attempts.

During his Monday afternoon briefing with the media, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy reiterated his confidence in Rush and said he would be the starter moving forward.

"We have a lot of faith in Cooper. Everybody believes in him. How can you not based off the way he's performed," McCarthy said. "I just felt like he never really got into a rhythm."

McCarthy also said that the team would be signing another quarterback with Dak Prescott expected to miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. According to Newy Scruggs of NBC 5, that quarterback is Will Grier, who was released from the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad last week.

Grier was a 2019 third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers out of West Virginia. He was previously in Dallas from 2021-2022. He also made stops in Cincinnati, New England and Los Angeles (Chargers).

McCarthy said the team had no update on Prescott after the quarterback was scheduled to visit with a hamstring specialist in New York on Monday.
