This is the first time in the history of the American Red Cross that they've seen such a shortage of the blood supply.
Dan Halyburton has been a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 11 years. He says he's never heard the word "crisis" be used to describe our current blood supply. He says we must make donating a priority.
Unfortunately during the pandemic, donations have dropped significantly. He says blood isn't just needed in emergency situations, sickle cell patients for example rely on routine blood transfusions and blood is also needed at times during surgery.

Right now, he says don't count yourself out. If you are healthy and able, make the intention to come and donate, any and all blood types are needed.
